Both the tennis and golf teams have concluded thier seasons with reputable finishes.
Missing the state meet by only two points, the Lady Bears tennis team ended its season with a disappointment, according to senior Mari Gottlieb, captain.
The squad took fourth place two weeks ago at the regional meet. and were only two points away from going to the state meet. "We were hoping for more points," said Mari. The region contained five of the top ten teams. The squad also took fourth in the conference.
Junior Jen Davidson, number three singles, and senior Cait Hanely, number 4 singles, won their regional matches. "Singles play was excellent all year," said Mr. Pat Hoffman, tennis coach, "and our doubles improved a lot, but we would say that the singles were our strong point."
With a lot of young new varsity players the tennis team ended its season with a 3-2-4 record.
"We
had a lot of fun together this season," said Mari.
Golfers come
up just short
The boys' golf team finished its season with a tie for 15th place in the state match at Michigan State University last weekend.
The team battled 24 other squad ,along with cold and rainy weather, for a spot in the top 12 in order to advance to the final round. The Bears barely missed the cut-off, placing 15th, but Coach Dave Durr said that the team "put up a good fight." He also said that "the whole team shot great, and they all stayed within a few
strokes of each other."
The weather played a big part in the match, added Coach Durr. "It's hard to play and concentrate in weather like that." Dispite the results of the state match, the golf team had a "phenomenal season." The Bears won more then half of their conference matches and placed second in the Big 16 behind Mattawan, which qualified the Bears for state. "I was a little disappointed about state, but the rest of our season was really good," said senior team member Justin Delapa. "I'm glad that my senior year season turned out so good," agreed David Ambler, senior.
Now that the boys' season has come to a close, the girls team is getting ready for its turn. The team will start practices after spring break. Coach Durr said he is looking forward to having the same kind of winning season the boys' team had.
