With a record of 1-4-1, the girls swimmers are pressing on with their sights set on conference and state. Also, the Bears are looking forward to the Lakeshore/Bridgman meet next Tuesday, October 29 at Bridgman.
The conference championship meet will be hosted by Mattawan this year and is scheduled for November 8 and 9 at Western Michigan University.
"Kalmazoo Central and Portage Central are promising a strong performance at the conference meet," said head coach Mr. Paul Hirn. "We can help or hurt either team by surprising them with out entries. That's always our goal."
The state meet is also in the picture for a few qualifiers. Senior Laura Herzog, sophomore Hannah Darnton, and freshman Chelsea Guiffre have all qualified for individual events so far this year.
"This year the team is young. Twelve of our 25 swimmers are freshmen," said Mr. Hirn. "This year we are working on making the younger girls stronger and giving them the experience they need to be great competitors in future seasons." However, the team also has"great leaders," said Coach Hirn. Seniors Laura Herzog, Steph Bergman, Karen Mandarino, and Carrie Ann Bentham are providing the younger swimmers with the leadership they need.
